And this time it’s Solve Sundsbo. In her sultry new video for “You Da One”, Rihanna sports a short blonde mushroom cut in a sequence of shots that seem dangerously similar to the work of the famed fashion photographer. As a busy celebrity with a crammed work schedule barely allowing any sleep, I don’t blame Rihanna 100%.
The culprit? Melina Matsoukas. This shouldn’t be happening again. After the S&M video fiasco in which she settled out of court with David LaChapelle for an undisclosed amount here she is again faced with the same situation. Rihanna has to own up to her fault of keeping the same video director on the payroll. After studying the images which according to Fashionista appeared in an old issue of Numero, I’d have to agree with the critics. Rihanna was inspired, but should she be punished?
Not quite. I’m not so quick to bang down the gavel because these days originality is as easy to find as a needle in a haystack. I think the world of social media in which fans and critics alike have quick access to information and huge platforms to spill it on, it doesn’t give the artists a chance to explain themselves. Who knows, maybe Rihanna was planning to visit Entertainment Tonight to explain her concept for the video and give credit. Long story short, Rihanna needs to re-evaluate the people around. When money is involve there is no room for naivety. Just for the record, I loved the video. I think it’s beautifully done. Let’s hope she comes out with a statement soon.
