When I first delved head first in the world of catwalks and magazines, one of the first major models to catch my eye was Eniko Mihalik. She has this genuine sensibility with a doe-eyed stare that’s hard not to fall in love with. I don’t care how hot you think your body is, to be able to pull from within and deliver a captivating expression on camera is gold. In this spread for M Le Monde Mag, the model does just that.

It’s Finally Here! Marni for H&M Look Book

Another day, another look book for a high-end/mass-market creation. At the tail end of last year, right in the thick of the Versace for H&M hysteria, the retail chain announced a collaboration with Marni. After viewing so many designer collections for H&M (and passing up on the majority of them), this one speaks to me. It’s real, true, authentic Marni! Consuelo Castiglioni brought her love for patterns, rich fabrics, bold shapes, and cultural outlook to a price point we all can enjoy. Rumor has it each item will sell for less than $150. Hmph, take that Donatella! The collection launches at H&M stores worldwide on March 8, 2012.

La:Dolce:Vita’s Top 10 Highlights of New York Fashion Week Fall 2012

I was admittedly a Ghost Town DJ for most of New York Fashion Week, but I hit the ground running for the last few days of shows. This is an event you must be well ready for, or time will lapse and before you know it everyone’s heading to Lincoln Center except you. In the weeks leading up to Fashion Week, I had a ton of work projects I needed to knock out. Forget requesting invites and choosing outfits, during my downtime I just wanted to sleep. With that said, I did not think that I would be able to cover any shows, but it pays to have well-connected friends with too many things going on at once. Major shout out to The Style and Beauty Doctor and fashion stylist extraordinaire, Kailee Parker. If it wasn’t for them I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to experience the Fall 2012 showings at all. In lieu of boring you with show reviews (maybe I’ll do a couple later), I want to highlight some of my major moments throughout the week.

In no particular order….

I attended the J. Mendel show on Wednesday of last week. Seated in front row with dark round shades were two ladies I’ve obsessed over in the past. Yes! I was only a few feet away from Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen. This may be hard to believe but these two moved in unison. They kept their shades on the whole show (there’s no telling if they ever saw the true look of the clothes) and just oozed out pure high society coolness. It’s like they were the grand dame of the secret society of cool.
The J. Mendel show was a melting pot of big names, but aside from seeing MK + A, I spotted stylist and editor and one of my personal style icons, Giovanna Battaglia in front row! She sat next too W Magazine Editors, Edward Enninful and Stefano Tonchi. I literally stalk this woman. I even have her saved as a search on Tumblr. It was good to catch a glimpse of her at the show.
Speaking of MK + A, I had the opportunity to attend the presentation for Elizabeth and James. The event was really private (only a few attendees were let in at a time) and I kept my fingers crossed for a MK+ A appearance. How awesome would it have been to talk to the sisters one-on-one about the collection? Unfortunately they were probably packing for London as they were a no-show. Either the way the clothes were awesome. I wrote a review of the line for NuMode Magazine here.
I got hella compliments on these shoes my mom bought for me a while back. This made me feel good. lol.
On my way leaving the shows for a little food break, I was ambushed by Fashion Buzz TV! I was a sport and took their fashion quiz on the spot. I got 4 out of 5 questions right. If I ever find the video I will post on my Facebook Page.
For the start of my Fashion Week adventures I attended TexturedMedia’s, Texture on the Runway hair/fashion show at the City Winery with my friend Kristel. It was a fun event and a great opp to network with other natural hair ladies. Read the recap here.
I also saw ANTM alum, Tocarra strutting her stuff on her way to the Milly Fall 2012 fashion show. We came out at the same time and photogs just swarmed her. Little did I know that one of those photos would wind up being on TheYBF.com. Look at who’s in the background. *sigh*
Farah Angsana’s runway show was breath-taking.. OMG. Recap here.
I spotted Beyonce’s stylist, Ty Hunter outside of Lincoln Center. The man is gorgeous and his locs were laid!
I attended an event for Ulta Beauty at Caravan studios which was loads of fun. More info on that in a later post.

It was fun being a socialite for a week, but now it’s back to the paper route! I enjoyed every bit of the experience. For those of you who want to attend or cover shows next season, I say build a positive reputation online. Show people that you are hardworking. Network with editors, bloggers, stylists, PR people and connect with your readers. Don’t be afraid to speak up. You never know what position the right connection will put you in. Be open and enjoy the experience. Until next fashion week!

Best Dressed at the 2012 NAACP Image Awards

I love the NAACP Image Awards. The show which celebrates the artistic, cultural and political attributes of African-Americans aired over the weekend. It’s always a joy to watch the unpredictable antics of celebrities at other award shows, but as a young black woman on the climb, this one feels like home. It’s rare to see people of color on the silver screen, so it’s great to see talent of all shades being honored. The NAACP Image Awards is the homecoming bash for Black Hollywood. So who wore what to the ball?

Funny lady, Taraji P. Henson has gone through a style rut as of late. With this look she got back to her fashionably hit status. This silver gown is perfect for the star’s curvy figure. Her softly coiffed hair and make-up were a flawless pairing as well.

I still have chills from Amber Riley’s Whitney Houston tribute on Glee, and in this deep blue sequined gown she just gave me a full on fever. There isn’t a thing about this look I would change. I love that she knows how to choose great dresses to suit her body type.

Viola Davis‘ boobage was on full display! Clearly she’s determined to avoid the strict matronly box that Hollywood wants to place her in. I love the detail on the upper part of the dress. My only gripe is the makeup. I need her makeup artist to get her foundation shade right. Come on, Viola!

My favorite set of sisters showed up on the red carpet looking absolutely ravishing. The contrasting looks complimented each of their bubbly personalities. I am dying for Tia’s green one-shouldered gown and that thigh-high split. Tamera looks gorgeous in her muted silver gown.

Does Vanessa Williams ever age? That’s a serious question. Her body looks great in this gold and black wrap gown. The colors are a great match with her olive skin tone.

Just like SJP will forever be Carrie Bradshaw, Tracee Ellis Ross will never not be Joan. She showed up to the award show in a black and gray poof gown. The look fits her quirky style. The pop of pink on the lip pulls it all together. I wish she had chosen a more elegant hairstyle, but I’ll take what I can get.

Keke Palmer showed up in a sweet hot pink look. The star’s makeup is gorgeous per usual. The purple lipstick is a risk that paid off.

Sanaa Lathan walked the red carpet with Anthony Mackie. The actress looked great in a bold orange column gown. As much as I love Sanaa and her innocent style, I want her to wear something more risqué. Just once!

Men’s Fashion Brief: Good Bow Tie Buys Under $75

Well, well, well. You know you’re doing something right when a person of the opposite sex asks you for style advice.

Alicia Keys and Angela Simmons Rock Heavy Duty Neckwear! Are You Into It?

If there was ever a time to implement the attitude “go hard or go hard” to one’s take on fashion, that occasion would likely be for the Grammy’s or some time during New York Fashion Week. Go hard is just what Alicia Keys and fashion entrepreneur, Angela Simmons did on their respective playing fields. At the Grammy’s, Alicia sported a form fitted black sleeveless cocktail dress anchored by a weighty piece of artisan neck wear and Angela took her quirky taste to the tents of New York Fashion Week, wearing an interesting gold-plated piece of her own. There is no disputing the fact that both ladies brought their A-game, but who’s look were you into more? I’m kind of on board with A. Keys’ sleek take, as it looks to be just an intricate piece of design built into the dress. Angela’s necklace is pretty cool, but I don’t think it meshes well with her ensemble. Thoughts? I often find myself flipping through fashion magazines feeling less than inspired. Most people don’t know this, but I’m a magazine hoarder in secret. It’s a bad addiction to have. My magazine’s are my babies. As someone who constantly views editorials, it’s very rare that I land on a page that makes me want to immediately go out and buy the featured item, or at least find a duplicate. I stumbled upon this gorgeous model with a honey-chocolate complexion. Aside from her sharp blue glare, I was drawn in by her aqua fan style earrings. A few years ago sea blue accessories hit the scene heavy influenced by Native American culture. Don’t go that route. Leave the fringe vest and moccasins at home. Fab Event Recap: Curls Unleashed Launch Party

Afrobella and Taren Guy at Curls Unleashed Launch Party

A kaleidoscope of natural hair beauties is the best way I can describe the Curls Unleashed Launch Party. Held at the Carlton Hotel in midtown Manhattan, this event showed the variety of natural hair. From transitioners to veteran naturals — an array of experience, knowledge and positivity moved through the air. As I walked to the coat-check I spotted Taren Guy aka Taren916 — the host of the evening and natural hair and beauty YouTube Vlogger. As the night went on more natural hair “celebs” filled the space. Kim Coles, AfroBella, Sherry Blossom, and Ahsiek118 were just some of the amazing ladies in attendance.

In attempt to make my way to the products table I ran into Candace Morrison, one of the brand managers for Organic Root Stimulator. She gave me a briefing on the new product line. “Curls Unleashed” was designed to cater to curly hair and all seven products were made and developed by their in-house chemist, Erica Douglas along with a full team of curlies. The product price points range from $10.99-$14.99. I can be a bit picky about the products I use in my hair, so let me say that I will not purchase a product if I do not like the scent. Surprisingly each product she handed to me smelled delicious.

As I prepared to call it a night I was gifted a jar of No Restrictions Moisturizing Conditioner. Overall it was a wonderful event and I am excited to test out these products.
